Lower Marsh Hotel

[Waterloo, London SE1]

Award

Best Architecture / External Design
Best Property (1-20 units)

This innovative project involved the construction of a five-storey boutique hotel and wine bar made from 25 repurposed, end-of-life shipping containers. The programme delivered 20 high-specification, apartment-style rooms situated above a ground-floor restaurant. Each compact unit was designed to maximise efficiency, featuring marble and stained-plywood interiors, micro-kitchens, and multifunctional living spaces. The development demonstrates how sustainable, technology-driven urban structures can effectively unlock the potential of complex and highly constrained city sites.

The project features a distinctive geometric facade comprising welded steel fins that provide essential solar shading while referencing the containers’ industrial origins. To address the site’s proximity to the busy Waterloo Station main line, our team integrated special rubber pads between storeys and high-performance acoustic doors to mitigate noise and vibration. The technical delivery included the complex task of cutting away container sides to create continuous internal spaces for the bar and the installation of a rear gantry system with lifts and balconies, providing guests with expansive views of the London skyline.
